Hello. We are Ann and Roy Young, the fortunate residents for the past 12 years at 414 Dunkle Road, Bellefonte, PA. We would like to share with you some of our experiences and impressions concerning our time of living at this wonderful place. When we moved here in 1998, we were seeking property with pasture because we were bringing our 2 horses along as well as our 2 dogs. We were very fortunate to find this location which was also in close proximity to State College since Roy was assuming a position as a department head at Penn State. I later began working at PSU as well, so we both needed to travel daily to State College about 20 minutes away.

One of our favorite things about living here is the country setting, which is quiet and private but not secluded since we have neighbors, including adjacent farmers as well as lot owners with diverse occupations along Dunkle Road. The beautiful mountains with the combination of woodland and open fields have been great sources of enjoyment as we go on hikes or just sit by the pond to cast a few lines in the water. Roy and I both love to garden, so we have always tried to grow plenty of vegetables in the summer. The soil in the garden area has been amended every year with natural horse manure, and is very fertile. We have enjoyed eating and preserving the apples and pears from the trees as well. The house itself has been very comfortable for us. The living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room flow into each other, which lends themselves to entertaining and family gatherings. We have used the spacious deck on numerous occasions for entertaining as well. It is a relaxing viewpoint for observing wildlife from migrating birds to squirrels, rabbits, and deer. Upstairs the master bedroom suite with attached sunroom and generous closet area has been both pleasing and functional for us. I have always been a lover of lighted areas, so the large windows and skylights have been enjoyed greatly. Even though the geothermal heating and air system has provided superbly comfortably and economical heating and cooling, the wood-burning heatilator fireplace in the family room has made this area especially cozy on cold winter days.

Our home is in Walker Township. A new and very good elementary school is located about 3 miles east off highway 64 in Hublersburg. The middle school and high school are in Bellefonte, 5 miles to the west. When we moved here our son entered PSU as a freshman and our daughter entered the 9th grade at Bellefonte High School. The high school received extensive renovations and additions last year and is quite lovely and spacious. Our daughter had a good experience at Bellefonte and particularly enjoyed cross-country running. With her sound academic background at Bellefonte High, she went on to get her undergraduate degree at PSU and is currently working on a PhD degree at NC State University.

The area has offered many great opportunities for activities from participating in sporting and cultural events to outdoor activities. One thing I especially enjoy is boating on the lake at Bald Eagle State Park which is only 15 minutes from our house. What a thrill it was last summer to be boating on the lake and see three young bald eagles soaring in the air above the lake! To enjoy our horses we simply saddle up and ride up the mountain ridge to numerous scenic long trails. Of course, we can also satisfy our love for hiking in a moment's notice on these same trails or on endless trails in other areas in central Pennsylvania. We have truly been blessed to live in this rural neighborhood where both Nature and neighbors are a stone's throw away.
